He could not figure out why we don't have them in some form. Talk about a fish out of water :)

Tinky,

Harness racing one day (within 10 years) will eliminate the win pools and only have the exchange. That's my bet. The pools are too small at 95% of racetracks.

Janne,

Good to hear from you again, old friend. Thanks for that, as I have always wondered what you can bet on what races up there!

PTPPull the Pockethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05082676049275768769noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8560898823512627114.post-17367421447926923912011-02-15T06:16:16.502-05:002011-02-15T06:16:16.502-05:00I'm all for offering new types of wagers, howe...I'm all for offering new types of wagers, however the key is to offer them at different points through the cards.

NYRA at one time offered two quiniellas a day (don't know if they still do).

Why we offer trifectas every race I don't know. Has the overall handle grown? Of course it has but some of the pools have of course also diminished due to the additional types of bets that have been included.

Best regards, JanneAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8560898823512627114.post-5806657985450977412011-02-14T21:51:45.997-05:002011-02-14T21:51:45.997-05:00The most important innovation in wagering in the p...The most important innovation in wagering in the past 10 years is Betfair's peer-to-peer exchange system. The vast bulk of the handle on that system is win wagering, with place (show in American parlance) betting a meaningful, though distant second.

In other words, given the right type of market, the most basic of wagers can be turbo-charged.Tinkynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8560898823512627114.post-61482713916501237302011-02-14T19:40:41.540-05:002011-02-14T19:40:41.540-05:00North American racing is also losing a lot of pote...North American racing is also losing a lot of potential handle through the lack of 'fractional betting'. In Australia if I want to put a 4 box trifecta (cost $24) and I only have $20 in my pocket, I can still have the bet but I get a percentage of the dividend, not the full dividend. North America's archaic tote system needs a drastic overhaul to let this type of betting occur as not only does it suit the casual/first time bettor who doesn't necessarily want to work out the permutations, but also the high end handicapper who wants to include marginal horses in races but bet to a limit.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8560898823512627114.post-77988720309845091782011-02-14T18:55:07.835-05:002011-02-14T18:55:07.835-05:00I have always felt that racetracks overdid it with...I have always felt that racetracks overdid it with the Rolling Doubles and The Pick 3's etc.

What they should have done for a 9 race card:

3 Pick 3's races 123 - 456 - 789
4 Daily Doubles races 12 34 56 89

As it stands every pool is an opportunity for a money grab but I suppose many bettors are leery of landing on underlays.
